Wednesday night, a massive inferno broke out at a apartment on Lyman Street in Holyoke, shooting spectacular flames high into the sky. Fire officials said a space heater is to blame for ruining Christmas and destroying childhood memories.

It took firefighters more than five hours to fight the flames. Six people were injured, including two children. Three firefighters were also trapped inside the building. They got out and are expected to be okay.

Witnesses said a woman was trapped on the third floor. She attempted to jump to safety but was called off by those on the ground.

Two people were airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital and four others are being treated for smoke inhalation at Holyoke Medical Center.

The Red Cross is assisting 15 of the families and providing shelter for 10 on them.
