Hoping For A White Christmas

If there is one day of the year we want the hills covered with snow, it is Christmas Day. Annually, we always have a pretty good shot in western Massachusetts. Nearby Bradley International Airport, the official climate site for our region, reports at least an inch of snow on the ground 57% of the time on Christmas Day.

"I would be thrilled if it snowed on Christmas it would be so magical." said South Hadley resident Alysa Wolf.

Norman Brown of Westfield agrees. "The whiteness makes everything worth it. It makes the holidays much more joyous and much more pure."

This year head towards Cape Cod or the Connecticut coast for a true winter wonderland. They are still digging out from over a foot of snow, as this past weekend's storm made holiday traveling and shopping a nightmare throughout the Northeast.

Brittney Gaspari made the long, exhausting trip up from Winston-Salem, N.C. through the snowstorm. "Instead of about 12 hours it took us about three days. But we are very excited to be up north and hoping we get some nice snowfall for Christmas time."

Right now the Springfield area actually has the least amount of snow on the ground compared to much of New England. According to the National Weather Service, the downtown Springfield area and much of Hampden and Hampshire counties have 3 inches of snow or less on the ground as of Tuesday morning.

"What we'd like to get is a white Christmas." said Michael Davidson of Feeding Hills, Mass. "Just a couple of inches to put it on top what we have already and then we'll be all set. Anything more than that, no thank you."

"If it's white I'll be happy, if it's snowing that would be better." said Wolf. I'm not traveling on Christmas so I don't have to worry about it."

Whatever snow is left out there, it will be a nice change of pace. For three of the last four Christmas days we've had the blue raindrops instead of the white snowflakes. Our last true white Christmas was in 2002, when about 4 inches of snow fell in Springfield.
