It's been 10 years to the day since Holyoke police officer John DiNapoli was murdered. Even though time has healed DiNapoli's family, they say they are now worried about other officers on the streets.

Gathered around a monument in his honor. Family, Friends John DiNapoli's fellow officers at the Holyoke Police Department pay tribute to the fallen officer.

December 22, 1999 DiNapoli was off duty, unarmed and in an unmarked car when he volunteered to respond to a disturbance call. That's where he ran into Eddie Morales who had just been let out of jail on $300 bail by Judge Joseph Walker.

He had been wanted for six years on drug charges. Morales opened fire on DiNapoli, killing him. For days the city of Holyoke was shut down as DiNapoli's fellow officers searched for his killer.

Andrew DiNapoli says, "During the second day of the wake we were told by Mark Canoyer that they actually caught the man who killed my dad. It was very weird, because it was somber in the funeral home but when he came out and told us that the place erupted and everybody in there was hugging and cheering."

DiNapoli's son Andrew and daughter Jobeth say they've healed over the past 10 years. But not a day goes by that they don't think of their father.

Jobeth DiNapoli says, "Could my dad's death have been prevented if the Judge set a higher bail for him? Maybe."

The same Judge who let their father's killer free set another man free on $10,000 bail for child rape in December. Last Friday that same man raped a 3 year old girl.

Andrew DiNapoli says, "There's a lot of people out there walking the streets who shouldn't be, but they are because of the laws that we have."

In 2001 Morales was convicted of DiNapoli's murder and sentenced to life in prison without the chance for parole.

Jobeth DiNapoli says, "I buried my father 10 years ago and my brother is now a police officer in Holyoke and it scares me to know that he's dealing with the same kind of people that killed my dad. So if laws need to be stricter to keep my brother safe then it should be done."
