Strokes are the leading cause of adult disability in the United States and the third leading cause of death in America. It's important that all of us know how to recognize a stroke and start learn how to prevent them.

According to the National Stroke Association up to 80 percent of strokes are preventable. Bill Garrand, a Registered Nurse and Nurse Manager of the I-C-U and Medical and Surgical Departments at Wing Memorial Hospital in Palmer joined us live via Skype on Friday to talk about strokes. He said the most important way to prevent one is good medical care. He said people who smoke or are overweight are most at risk. He also said if you start feeling numbness call 911 immediately and tell them you might be having a stroke. It's imperative you get medical care as soon as possible.

If you have questions about a medical topic you would like to ask during a live Skype interview email us at: housecalls@cbs3springfield.com.
