An iconic American car and a landmark in Springfield's South End for over 50 years is driving out of Western Mass.

The Orr Cadillac sign has been seen from the highway coming into to Springfield since 1957. For well over half a decade, the Orr family has sold the classic American made Cadillac from their showroom on Mill Street.

"The 1959 Caddy, to the El Dorado with the famous fins, one of the first front wheel drive cars, a 1967 El Dorado, to the Escalade which made Cadillac cool again," explained third generation Cadillac salesman Sandy Orr. "My grandfather came down from Adams and operated several dealerships, Nash, Studebaker and then finally in 1940 just before World War II he was awarded the Cadillac franchise."

With such a rich history with the car company, Orr along with many others, were shocked to find out that the cash strapped General Motors was pulling its franchises out of small markets, eliminating 1,300 of the 6,000 dealers it had heading into bankruptcy. That means Orr is out in Western Massachusetts.

"We've gotten a lot of feedback from customers, and they are very upset they’ve been loyal customers for years and years spanning generations," Orr said.

That means if you want to buy a brand new Caddy you are going to have to take a ride. The nearest Cadillac-only dealership will be well over an hour away in Framingham. That means the Orr family and their employees will have to come up with another plan to stay in business.

"Our transition plan moving forward, is to be a full service garage, servicing GM cars, Cadillac’s in particular and all makes and models as well as selling all makes and models," Orr said.

Burke is going out too, as well as the Greenfield dealer, There will not be a caddy dealer anywhere in Western Mass. I don't know about vernon CT but many people are not going to have caddy's in western MA anymore they will switch brands. GM is stupid for eliminating all of the dealers in this area.

The script should have stated Cadillac-only. You are indeed correct though, there are much-closer Caddy dealers in the area. Thanks for keeping us honest.

Those folks are all the way the other side of the aisle. They just look closer.

What about Burke-Whitaker in Northampton, or Scranton Motors in Vernon, CT? They're listed as Cadillac dealers.
