Habitat Home Built From Mansion

Habitat Home Built From Mansion

By Liz Tufts

A new Habitat for Humanity home is going up in Springfield, and it's all thanks to a mansion that was recently torn down more than a hundred miles away.

A waterfront mansion in Cohasset was built in 1919, and in just five weeks it was deconstructed by members of ReStore, a non-profit home improvement center in Springfield.

Though the house is gone, it's managing to make one family's dreams come true more than a hundred miles away.

All of the lumber from the old home is being used to build a new one on Chester street in Springfield.

"The home was about 6-thousand square feet, and the lumber will help build flooring and a few decks for a few homes, " says John Majercak of ReStore.

The lumber is of the highest quality, and it was carefully removed out in Cohasset to use here.

Something many say not only benefits the environment, but reduces the cost of the overall construction.

"It's terrific, we are recycling, and saving materials, and saving costs so we can reduce the cost of the home for a low income family, " says Habitat For Humanity's Executive Director, Steve Gelling.

On Thursday volunteers broke ground, and got right to work. More than 50 people from from the Economic Development Council of western mass are taking part in the effort.

"Using old lumber is symbolic...bringing something old back to life, and it's great for this particular house, " says volunteer Allan Blair.

Volunteers hope to have the home finished by the end of the year.
