Two Colrain men are being hailed as heros, after running inside a burning home on Thanksgiving to save a woman's pets.

Leland Herrett and his friend were settling down after a thanksgiving feast when they heard a loud noise. "We heard the fire alarm going off in the house, " explains Herrett.

The noise was coming from 6 Greenfield Road in Colrain. When they saw smoke they called 911, and quickly ran to see if everyone was okay.

"We ran over there and the lady came over told us her animals were inside the house and she asked us to go get them, " says Herrett.

Without a second thought, Herrett and his friend ran into the burning home, searching for the woman's pets. "I heard fire above me, I could hear the snapping and popping and I grabbed the guinea pig, " says Herrett.

But the woman said her cat was still inside. "My friend Ryan went upstairs and found the cat in the backroom and he saw the flames shooting out and that's when he grabbed the cat and just came downstairs, " adds Herrett.

Colrain firefighters were still on the scene Friday afternoon trying to find the cause. They say the fire started in between the second floor and the attic. The flames were so intense they had to turn to Vermont firefighters for help.

Officials say the home is a total loss, but the homeowner does has something to be thankful for--her pets.

The men who risked their lifes to save them say they would do it all over again. "I didn't really think about it, I just ran in there to try to help them, " says Herrett.

The fire is still under investigation.
