A 52-year-old man who crashed his van was rushed to the hospital to be treated for an apparent heart attack.

Pelham police said the man was transporting a mental health patient to a near-by facility when he went into cardiac arrest. He was driving down Enfield Road near Amherst Road when his medical condition caused him to lose control of the vehicle. Two nurses from Boston who witnessed the accident pulled over and started to perform C.P.R. When police arrived on scene, they used a defibrillator to get the man's heart beating again.

"when officers first arrived on scene, two nurses were giving him C.P.R. Then they used a defibrillator and he was transported to Baystate Medical Center by the Amherst Fire Department," Pelham Police Chief Gary Thomann said.

The passenger in the van only suffered minor injuries. Police are not releasing the name of the driver. He is currently being treated at Baystate Medical Center where police say he is awake and talking.
