An Easthampton home suffered extensive fire damage Tuesday morning just after the homeowners left town for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Their teenage son, who did not make the trip, woke up to heavy smoke just after 6:30 a.m. Firefighters from Easthampton, Westhampton, and Northampton contained the fire quickly. Crews determined the fire started in the chimney and ignited some of the wood on the mantle.

"There was pretty heavy fire in the walls," said Easthampton Fire Chief David Motter. "It went from the first floor up to the second floor into a small attic crawl space. It did pretty significant fire damage through those areas and there was minimal water damage to the house as well."

The fire caused an estimated $60,000 in damage but no injuries.
