Attorney General and State Senate candidate Martha Coakley is making stops across the Pioneer Valley. Martha Coakley continued her campaign swing with a stop in Springfield where she got the backing from several local and state officials.

"She understands demands that are placed on our police departments," Hampden County District Attorney William Bennett said.

Coakley said she understands the region.

"I started out this morning in North Adams where I am from and where my dad owned a small insurance agency. He was very involved in the town," Coakley said.

She hopes her local roots will get her the win in the primary election on Dec. 8.

"Cities like Springfield suffer a lot with the economy like this. I want to hold people accountable and make changes, not just for you, but with you," Coakley said.

As the front-runner and the only woman in the race to replace the late Sen. Ted Kennedy, she said she wants to follow in his footsteps with issues like health care reform and civil rights for all.

Although she now lives in the eastern part of the state, she said that does not mean the people in Western Mass. will be left out of the issues at hand.

"My heart is still in Western Massachusetts," Coakley said.
