Victor Rodriguez has been living at his home on Bennett Road in Westfield for more than eight years. He said his quiet neighborhood has been a great place to raise a family, but a proposed dynamite storage facility several hundred feet away from his back door has him worried.

Rodriguez said the news arrived in a letter from real estate agent John Galanek. It invited residents to a meeting to explain what is being planned for the property behind them.

"Putting dynamite in the 12 acres behind the house," Rodriguez said.

Galanek would not say the name of the company that wants to buy the property but said the proposed facility would store up to 1,400 pounds of dynamite and blasting caps in 13 different buildings. Galanek added that the TNT would be kept at a safe distance from homes.

Homeowners said there is no safe distance.

"Even 300 yards, if it meets federal requirements, is still far too close," said Joe Calderella who lives near the site.

"it's not a good thing to have. I mean, we have kids. Our land goes right into the woods probably nearby where this is going to be placed," Rodriguez said.

There is a potential that trucks will go in and out of the facility 10 times per day.

"The loading and unloading of this material. It will probably have to be trucked in every so often, and if they have it there and plan on moving it, storing and moving it back and forth, it's a big risk," Rodriguez said.

Plans for the facility are in the early stages. Resident hope it doesn't go much further.

"You don't usually see neighbor's homes, Smith's home, Jones' home and then across the street an entryway to a dynamite storage facility. I've never head of anything like that so close to residential areas and properties," Calderella said.
