A 2-year-old Springfield boy was found by a neighbor early Wednesday morning in below freezing temperatures. He was wearing only a diaper. His family didn't even know he was gone until police told them.

Surveillance video shows a 2-year-old Springfield boy walking near busy Belmont Street. You see him pace the sidewalk, and then start walking fast towards Longfellow Terrace.

Anita Crisotoma who lives nearby didn't see the boy at first, but she sure did hear him. "All of a sudden I heard some kid crying, I thought it was from the movie I was watching," says Crisotoma.

But it wasn't a movie, it was the 2-year-old pleading for help. Crisotoma popped her head outside and couldn't believe her eyes. "He was wearing just a diaper, no shirt, no shoes or socks, nothing," describes Crisotoma.

Walking nearly naked in below freezing temperatures. Crisotoma says the temperature was in the upper 20's. She says the boy felt like an ice cube.

She called police and waited with the little boy until they arrived. "I felt so bad, I took off my sweater and wrapped him in it and he was shivering, " says Crisotoma.

His mother got to the scene first. She was just getting home, and didn't know he left the house. She told Crisotoma the boy's grandmother was watching him.

Police have now handed the case over to the state Department of Children and Families. They say the toddler was lucky.

Lucky that people like Anita Crisotoma were awake, and heard his faint cries for help. "I don't consider myself a hero, anybody would have done it," says Crisotoma.

The little boy was checked out, but he did not need medical attention. He's back home with his mother while the investigation continues.
