The November elections may be over, but not for some kids in Southwick. Fourth grade students in Scott Bellone's class at Woodland Elementary held their own primary on Tuesday, Nov. 17.

The children are learning about government by campaigning for office, electing a president, and ultimately, making their own laws.

"Students learn about the political process, how government works, and they get a pretty good idea about how democracy works. It promotes building citizenship and it helps them in an authentic way," Bellone said.

Meghan Turgeon is running for president, and like all good politicians, she's making promises.

"It's your birthday you will get a no reading pass because I feel that the people who have their birthday on a special day like Christmas or Veterinarian's (sic) day feel like they get no homework and no reading but the kids who have their birthday on a school day have to do their homework and their reading," Turgeon said.

The two winners will now battle it out for class president.
