The latest round of state budget cuts has hit Western Mass. veterans hard.

"With all the cuts that have come down over the course of the last fiscal years, with the 9C cuts, this probably has been the straw that broke the camel’s back,” said Holyoke Soldiers’ Home Superintendent Michael Pasterczya.

The loss of $894,404 in the operating budget will result in vital cuts to services. All of the outpatient services at the state-run facility will be eliminated.

"As far as the outpatient services, it’s going to be be close to around 2,500 veterans who avail themselves to those services,” Pasterczya said.

It is collateral damage as the Patrick administration tries to get the state budget back on track. Now veterans who counted on the home on the hill to take care of their medical needs will have to go somewhere else, or many different places instead of just one.

"This was a one stop shop. The veteran could come in get a physical in the outpatient department. That veteran may need some lab work, he would go to lab and have that done. The veteran may need a prescription, he or she could go to the pharmacy and get it filled,” Pasterczya said.

"I come here for my prescriptions at least a yearly check up, I've been doing that for a long long time,” said veteran Troy Raby.

They will have less than a month to figure it out; outpatient services are set to close on Dec. 1.

"In March I'm supposed to be coming up here for my lab work up , so I don’t know what I’m gonna do,” Raby said.

"It’s a scramble to get their health care needs taken care of. Some of them may be in the course of treatment. We do need to ensure that they have a continuum of care,” said nurse Susan Porter.

Veterans could head to the VA in Leeds, but that hospital is federally funded, which presents a different set of criteria for those looking for services.

"Here at Soldiers’ Home, it was much easier. There is also a statute in Massachusetts that distinguishes between veterans different than a federal statute, so there are more veterans who could avail themselves here at Holyoke than could by necessity up at Leeds,” Pasterczya said.

Along with pleas to Gov. Deval Patrick, there is already a rally planned to keep try and keep the outpatient services open. It i set for Saturday, Nov. 14, at 1 p.m. at Crosier Field in Holyoke. The purpose is to urge politicians to provide supplemental funding for the Soldiers’ Home.
