Several people heard and saw the shooting on Allen street. For a change, they cooperated with police and told them what they saw.

"There was a lot of action going on here and it was very scary," witness Christine Guyer said.

Guyer works at Human Resources Unlimited in the business complex at 1 Allen Street. She heard the shooting that took place just beyond the front door. Springfield Police heard it too, thanks to their shot spotter listening system.

When the first officers arrived on the scene just before 10 a.m., they found a 19-year-old man in a Jeep Cherokee parked on Hickory Street outside Guyer's workplace. He had been shot in the back and the stomach.

"At first we thought it was a drive by shooting but then we found out there were two vehicles involved and there was an injured person that had gone into the door next door, the company next door," Guyer said.

Witnesses described the second car as a teal green 2000 Chevy Malibu. Police believe the shooting was a dispute between rival gangs.

Another witness didn't want to reveal his name but said, "This community here surrounds high profile crime areas. It's pretty much quite around here all the time. It's obvious that the victims of this crime and the perpetrators of this crime were just passing through this area."

Guyer said the shooting hits too close to home and now her business will be keeping the doors locked during business hours.

"When I'm driving to and from this location I do keep my doors locked because I am driving through and area that I consider unsafe," she said.

"I do watch my back a little bit and I try not to be at the wrong place at the wrong time," another witness said.

According to police, the victim has had run-ins with the law before. He is listed in critical but stable condition.
