A South Hadley man is recovering from burns after the porch of his home went up in flames. It happened Wednesday night on Tampa Street.

Lee Pedigo and his family were finishing up supper when they saw a glow coming from their neighbors home.

"We saw sparks through our window and went outside we saw front porch of the house totally engulfed in flames," Pedigo said.

Pedigo immediately dialed 911. Moments later firefighters from both Hadley and Holyoke converged on Tampa Street. When they arrived, flames were shooting from the front porch and a 48-year-old male resident was burnt.

The front porch is burned and blackened. The homeowner was taken to Baystate Medical Center with minor burns. Fire officials now believe a cigarette may be to blame.

The damage is estimated at almost $100,000.

"A lot of people are talking about it because it happened at the worst time; holiday's are around the corner and people are out of work," Pedigo said.

The victim's name is not being released. The State Fire Marshall's Office continues to investigate.
