History was made in Holyoke election night. Voters there elected their first ever female mayor.

Before her first 24 hours as mayor-elect elapsed, Elaine Pluta was already getting started on her new job.

"I have several ideas," Pluta said.

So many in fact, she said she has not had time to think about her historic win.

"When I was getting ready for the election, I really wasn't thinking about the historical aspect, I was just concentrating on getting elected," Pluta said.

Pluta, who has 14 years on the city council under her belt, beat out her opponent Daniel Boyle. Current Mayor Micheal Sullivan decided not to run after 10 years in office.

The top of her priority list as mayor is to bring back life into downtown. She wants to start by attracting new businesses to the city.

"We have low electric rates, cheap rents, we have plenty of water we have fiber optics companies can use," Pluta said.

She said a new $100 million university data center could be the key in putting Holyoke on the map.
