UMass students and local young adults had a lesson in politics when they spoke with Gov. Deval Patrick.

"We have had a long and rich tradition here in Massachusetts of educating smart contributors and sending them off into the work-force. But we need you here," Patrick said.

The message from the Governor to those gathered in a crowded room in the UMass Student Union was learn here, then stay here.

"We want them to think about their future here beyond going to school here. We get so much talent that comes to Massachusetts and sometimes we lose that talent and we need that talent to build new industries," the Governor said.

The future of the Commonwealth and the future of the students was one of the many issues that was brought to the table. The students are glad the Governor is listening.

"I appreciate that the Governor actually took time to come, I appreciate his honesty," said Marco Cross, a UMass student.

However, he is worried about paying for his education after graduation.

"If I walk out of here, like many of my friends have, not any money other than loans, I'm left with $90,000 in debt," Cross said.

Other issues students spoke about was climate change and violence in Springfield.
