A shrine is vandalized, angering bicyclists and neighbors. It was in honor of 21-year-old Blake Goodman who was killed in a bicycle accident in Amherst.

An all-white ten speed was placed along University Drive in Amherst this summer to honor the life of Misty Bassi who died at age 33. She was hit and killed while riding her bike in May. The ghost bike marks where mourners go to pay their respects and remember her life.

Another ghost bike sits nearby. It is twisted and mangled. This one was placed along Montague Road after Blake Goodman was hit and killed last month. He was 21 years old.

Sometime over the weekend, vandals popped the tires, tore off the seat, and even stepped on flowers placed at the scene of his death.

"It's really disrespectful to people who ride bikes in this community," Ellinor Schmidt said.

Witnesses told police they saw two men flee after they used axes to chop up the ghost bike. Residents who live near the scene cannot believe someone would be so disrespectful.

"I've left flowers at the scene, and to know someone could do that is shocking, it really makes me mad," Patricia Holland said.

Police continue to look for the vandals, and also for the driver who hit and killed Goodman. They're looking for a car resembling a black Geo Prism.

Goodman's father is now offering a $5,000 reward for any information. If you can help, call Amherst Police at 256-4011.

Blake was cremated. Not all of us have a cemetery to go to for a visit, and as if having someone disrespect the shrine was not enough, Blake's friends and family have to read comments like "I'm so tired of these shrines." You would not feel the same way if this was someone you knew, and if it is how you'd still feel if it was someone you knew, you are completely and utterly heartless. Let someone say "Enough" to a shrine built for you, or for your loved ones, and see how crumby it is to read.

I find the shrine quite moving. It's not hurting anyone, and it reminds me to watch out for bicyclists. This poor guy died for no reason. The accident was shocking and shameful. I couldn't imagine thinking these shrines were meaningless. They represent people like you and me. God bless you blake. Your shrine will allows you to put great value on life.

I am so tired of all these shrines all over the place. If you want to pay your respects go to a cemetary. Before long there will be a shrine on every corner. Enough...
