An Indian Orchard neighborhood is about to see some big changes. A state support team is working to clean up polluted brownfield sites across the state and especially here in western Massachusetts.

An abandoned building sits on the fringe of a 54 acre brownfield site in Indian Orchard. During the 70s and 80s, the property known as the Indian Orchard Business Park was used for heavy manufacturing. For the past 20 years it has sat vacant and unusable since the grounds are contaminated.

"One of the legacies of being an older industrial city is that there are contaminated properties that can't be used for other uses until they are cleaned up," Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray said.

A clean up is about to happen. The Patrick-Murray administration has announced the start of brownfield site demolition. A million dollars in state and federal money will be used to clean up and convert the property into a light industrial complex.

Cleaning brownfield sites around the state, like the one in Indian Orchard not only helps to create a strong foundation, it also helps redevelop and market the community.

"This is about jobs. Opening up 53 acres in the city of Springfield for redevelopment for mixed use like commercial or industrial, and that's important. Also for the city of Springfield, it's about tax base expansion so that there is additional revenue to pay for important services," Murray said.

It's something that excited the neighbors. Susan Cravensoto is the president of the Indian Orchard Citizens Council. She said the property has been a nuisance for years and they have high hopes for something new.

"Open space for the neighborhood. That is a definite must for this neighborhood. We have no community center for the youth or the seniors so we want to see it and tie in to the main street," Cravensoto said.

The cleanup will begin within the next few days.
