The last minute preparations are underway on Friday, before opening day at the new Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society in Springfield.

"Last minute touches on the building to make sure everything is ready for the opening," said Leslie Harris, Executive Director of the Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society.

The MSPCA closed its doors in March because of financial problems, leaving a trail of heartbreak for animal lovers. But Dakin was quick to bring some relief. In addition to their Leverett facility, they bought the old MSCPA building on Union Street to expand their services. "This is an incredible opportunity for Dakin to bring its animals and people to the southern part of the Pioneer Valley. This facility will house administrative offices, several classrooms and dog training classes," said Harris.

Dakin Officials say they hope to transform an old waiting room into an open space for cats to live in. They also plan to open a spay-neuter clinic. "We are looking at the potential of neutering and spaying 7,000 to 10,000 animals every year, that's a big step. We'll primarily be targeting cats," said Candy Lash, Director of Community and Media Relations for Dakin.

Candy Lash has seen this facility through its ups and downs, from sadness to elation. "Coming in today and seeing the new Dakin sign on our building. I thought, this is real, its happening," said Lash.

The official grand opening is Saturday afternoon. And with animals already here waiting for homes, officials can't wait to open the doors again.

God Bless all of you who work with animals. They have no voice to speak for themselves and rely on those who care for them. Best of luck to Dakin, all on staff there, and all the animals that are being cared for.
