With dozens of clergy abuse cases still unsettled, the Springfield Diocese is still paying for the sins of some of it's former priests; and it's insurance carriers are still fighting against footing the bill.

"They are suggesting that the diocese knew about the clergy sex abuse scandal and if they knew about it than the coverage was improperly obtained and the insurance companies don't have responsibility," said Greenfield attorney, John Stobierski.

It's a fight that's lasted years and threatens to last even longer, after a recent ruling. A supreme court judge ordered the diocese to turn over more than 7,000 documents it claimed were protected under a variety of privileges.

Stobierski represents the vast majority of clergy sex abuse cases in Massachuetts. "They believe that the light of day will let the truth come out and, for many of them, getting to the bottom of this, knowing the truth, knowing what happened, knowing what the diocese knew and when they knew it is really important for them to move on to their healing," he said.

But the diocese claims it was just trying to protect the victims. Springfield Diocese spokesman, Mark Dupont, said, "The diocese is not protecting it's own self interest, in some level, we're trying to protect the confidentially of victims and other individuals who've come forward and provided us statements and other information regarding abuse that's taken place in the past, and they provided it with the understanding that it would be kept confidential and it wouldn't just be thrown out there for civil litigation purposes."

The Springfield Diocese is still deciding whether or not to appeal any of the decision.
