It has garnered attention from the Governor and even the President. Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr., accusing Cambridge police of racial profiling.

When Henry Louis Gates Jr., a black professor and well-known scholar at Harvard University was arrested by a white Cambridge police officer, racial profiling quickly became part of the story.

"There is a long history in this country of African Americans and Latinos being stopped disproportionately, that is just a fact," said President Obama during a news conference.

Gates was trying to open a jammed front door at his Cambridge home, when a neighbor thinking it was a burglar, called police. Gates was inside his house when Sergeant James Crowley arrived. A confrontation ensued and Gates was arrested for disorderly conduct. The charges were dropped, but Gates is claiming he was treated differently because he is black.

Holyoke Police Chief Anthony Scott says the President's comments were a rush to judgment.

"There are two sides to each story. I believe their responses were inappropriate to jump to that conclusion. I believe we should all wait to see what actually transpires at that scene, we were not present there," said Chief Scott.

The White House tried to clarify the President's remarks saying he was not calling the police officer "stupid" but that the situation got out of hand.

"They are painting that police officer with a big brush and they don't have all the facts and neither do I at this point," said Chief Scott.

Look at these mug shots they put up for everyone to see. Why not put mug shots of the cop who assaulted Gates, tresspass on Gates property, forced his way in his house, and arrested him? The cop should be arrested and get his mug shots too. Oh that's right, cops don't make human error? :)

I am not even thinking about the racial issue here. Just the fact of arresting someone on his own property is totally ridiculous. Gates never threatened these cops or their bodily persons. There is free speech left in this Country isn't there? Appears cops are being trained for a Police State plain and simple. They are no longer servants, they think they are your commanders. I think that half of their training should be to know the Constitution the thing they swore and Oath of Office to uphold !

The cops acted stupidly, and deserve to be fired and sued. He showed them ID with his address, but yet they forced their way into the house, and got PO'ed and arrested the guy.

You know Iam proud to be white. But cops are just the same as those gang members on the streets.Just because the guy is black don't mean he can't afford that house he was in that's the problem. The police allways jump to conclutions about a black or any other race. Before they get to know why he was their.THAT'S CALL BAD BLOOD IN THEIR VAINS.

Police allways treat the hispanics and blacks diffrently. There should be an equall of blacks, whites, and hispanics working as police officers. To many "kkk" in the police units this days.If they "police" treat us with some respect then they could get that in return. We are all humans just because they have a badge does'nt mean mean they could treat us with no respect. And when we try to talk to them they grab us and don't let us explain leading to false statment by police like disorderly conduct!!
