After accusations that the food at The Cove made people ill, Southwick's Board of Health has closed the facility down until test results are back from the state labs.

It's a wedding no one could forget.

"I was ill. My granddaughter was ill. She was vomiting. I had diarrhea," says Linda Baum, recalling her son's wedding in late June.

That story played out to a total of 16 people at several wedding receptions at The Cove.

"My mother was in the hospital for 7 days. The final diagnosis was food poisoning," Baum says.

Cove owner, Joe Scuderi, doesn't know how it happened. And potential patrons don't either. Steven Giordano and his fiancee are booked for September, but the allegations of tainted food have them scared.

"We have a lot of older people coming and we don't want to see them sick," Giordano says.

Thursday, Southwick's Board of Health ruled that The Cove couldn't reopen because there's no conclusive evidence on exactly what happened.

Food samples are still in the state labs and until tests come back, the Cove will be shut down.

"We have to do this for the safety of the people. I'm all for it," Scuderi says at the open meeting.

Joe's all for it, but it's still not good for business.

"People look at you, and they say they serve bad food, so until we really know what happened, let's not point fingers," Scuderi says.

On first inspection, health officials did point fingers. At two things: a larger than normal sink where workers wash their hands, and a dishwasher that's not hot enough. Scuderi's getting that fixed, but it's still a mystery if that's really the problem. Joe insists, the food is good.

"If you were to serve a banquet tonight, are you confident that your food is ok," asked a CBS 3 Springfield reporter.

"Yes, 100 percent," Scuderi replied.

But the Giordano party will wait until the state's verdict comes in.

"We're at an indecision point of what we're going to do, but we do have to make a decision quick because we're running out of time," Giordano says.

Test results are expected by Monday. The results will be announced at the next Board of Health meeting on July 10.

I thhink people shouldn"t point the finger as Joe stated. Why ruin the name of this Banquet Hall until all the results are in. The truth will be told, good or bad. People need to wait and see. I wish Mr.Scudei good luck.

"A larger than normal sink"? The size of a sink has no relevance to the spread of food poisoning so long as the sink is sanitary. The size of such is irrelevant. Must we make a mountain out of a mole hill every time something happens? I too wish the owners luck in this investigation, owners of food establishment's are at the disposal of their food vendors and they must trust the product they receive is quality and bacteria free. It is not always the fault of the restaurant.

I know 3 people right now who are very sick with the same symptoms but they DID NOT eat at The Cove. Sometimes a flu is just a flu Did only 1 patron receive medical care? And was there only 1 CONFIRMED case of food poisoning from The Cove? The news article mentions 16 sick people but only 1 of the 16 having gone to the hospital. And this happened over the course of 2 weddings? Unless each wedding only had 8 guests, it seems strange only a handful fell ill. Hmmmm??

I attended the June 19th wedding. There were close to 50 people ill. Some did NOT go to the doctor's. Most ended up in the ER & a handful of us saw our personal doctors after the board of health requested us to. You can verify through the board of health that test results so far have been CONFIRMED by the ER & Doctors of a bacterial food poisoning called "CAMPYLOBACTOR" look it up on the internet, it wasn't fun & I was VERY sick & couldn't care for my own kids.

Obviously not only do you not have your facts straight, your comment completely lacks intelligence. Before you write know what it is your writing about. Your certainly not paying attention.

The food was excellent - and the Bride and Groom that are featured on the website is the wedding party I was in - I was so impressed with the food and hall that I recommend The Cove to everyone I know for their events. Before people start getting nervous, lets wait to hear the facts.

I am supposed to be having my wedding at this venue in september. There are a few things that I have a problem with. Number one...neither Mr or Mrs Scuderi contacted us about any of this going on. And another thing is that this is not the only occasion where people have become ill after attending a wedding here. How do we know that our families and friends are safe at our own wedding if we dont take precaution to what these families are saying?
