A Springfield Police Officer is on his way to prison after being found guilty of stealing almost $2,000 dollars during a traffic stop.

"The court hereby orders that you be confined at the Massachusetts Correctional Institution at cedar junction for not less than three years and not more than 4 years."

As Springfield Police Officer Steven Buzzell was sentenced family, friend and his partner Leonardo Matos sat behind him. Buzzell was found guilty of stealing money from three tobacco farm workers during a 2008 traffic stop. Matos was found not guilty of the same crime.

The Judge also ordered Buzzell to pay nearly $2,000 in restitution to the victims and referred to Buzzell as a public predator, fueling public cynicism towards all police officers

Police Commissioner William Fitchet called Buzzell's actions a disgrace to the department.

Commissioner Fitchet says, "Whenever a Police Officer compromises the trust that has been places with him it's a serious violation and the disgraceful conduct is an exception of the daily heroic actions of the Springfield police officers."

Assistant District Attorney Stephen Spelman said the sentence was fair considering he Buzzell betrayed the oath he took in 1998 when he became a police officer.

Spelman says, "I Steven Buzzell do solemnly swear that I will bare true faith and allegiance to the United States of America and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and will support to constitution and laws thereof."

Commissioner Fitchet says he believes this incident was isolated despite the recent blemishes on the department's reputation.

Fitchet says, "You have to build trust one person, one incident at a time and it certainly is damaging and it's hurtful to everyone there are no winners in this case including the defendant."

Commissioner Fitchet says he has contacted the City Law Department to start the administrative procedure for termination of Buzzell as a police officer.

If any of you stole $2000 you would have gotten probation for a first time offense. He's getting 3 yrs! This was a harsh sentence compared to the rest of us.

Well this is the American citizens fault for being lazy with our rights and liberty. We let our elected officials dictate laws to us and give to much power to police over us. How many people will need to be killed, rob, beaten or murdered by the police before we say enough is enough and place these dirty cops on trail and prosecute them.

Seriously, a Cop the penalty for a defender of the public someon you are suppose to believe in to protect you and have your best interest at heart committing a crime. The penalties for this should be 10 times the normal. Otherwise you shouldnt be a Police officer stop being nice to these officials that abuse their positions otherwise no one is going to believe in the system or anyone that supports it.

There is a lot of corruption within the police departments around the country, but I still believe most cops are good people who take pride in performing a public There are some who act like the KGB while they have others who help you get your car running or push it out of traffic when it breaks down. Most are good and many of the bad ones feel stressed from trying to perform the impossible for little pay. This was just a bad person who tarnished his profession. He would disgrace any profession.

Our cops are just an extension of this regime, in which most if not all are after the power and/or money. The people need to take this country back!!!

"COP" use to stand for Constables on Patrol...now it stands for useless waste of my tax dollars. They work for us, we pay their salary with our taxes and we get treated like second rate citizens. Most "new" policemen and women are so because they can't get the power rush any other way. Anyone can go to police school!!!!

This case is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to corrupt cops! It's systemic! Big cities, small cities and suburban towns.....all have their dirty cops!

He should be working in Houston, they have a license to steal here. Houston cops can accue 5000 hours of vacation/sick/comp time. That means they retired and keep getting a paycheck for 2 years

The boy's in prison will treat the cop fairly, just like any other convict. Respect, and politeness... NOT !!! the guy deserves what he got.

I bet at least 50 percent of our cops are corrupt or liars and thieves, and doing drugs. Just look at the way most treat you now. When a cop is around everyone just shuts up and puts their heads down. This is fear of a public servant. When people fear their public servants you know darn well there is tyranny going on. When public servants fear the people there is freedom. Look at these jug head State Cops who think they are gods. Intimidating everyone, showing how tough he is behind the badge.

So if he only stole 2k and got 4 year then Madoff would have to spend 85,000,000 YEARS!! "Im down with that!"!!!

Another crooked cop, oh my--I have never trusted cops ever. Cops are human first and are subject to the same laws of humanity the rest of us are. I am glad he was caught before he could "legally rob" other people. Scum.

Sorry Monica, but you're being naive. Cops and firefighters are just people like everyone else. There are bad apples in every profession. You just didn't hear as much about it pre internet.

You know what really makes me sick about all of these corrupt cops? Its the fact that kids no longer have anyone to look up to these days...I used to idolize cops and firefighters and the like. Not anymore...

So....if you get pulled over and they ask for your ID you should maybe keep it between your teeth....NOT IN THE WALLET

Some cops allow the badge to get to their heads and they think they are above the law. Unfortunate for honest cops that these corrupt ones soil a reputation that cops are constantly trying to fix.

Maybe more cops will be going to jail for their conduct and corruption. They are not gods, they just think they are. Maybe some State police will go next.
