After several serious and some fatal accidents, lawmakers want to re-test drivers aged 85 and up.

"Her eyesight would fail or if her blood sugar went too low when she was behind the wheel, it was hard," says Angela Lamb, talking about the struggles her mother went through as an elderly driver.

"I was driving behind an 86 year old and he was clearly not safe to drive on the highway," says Keith Richardson, recalling an elderly driver experience.

"He wound up running up through a McDonalds play area right up and over and almost killed a couple kids that were playing," says Raymond Bailey, about a close call that happened in Worcester.

Everyone seems to have their own elderly driver story. And then, there are the stories that reach across the state.

In June, a 93 year old driver barreled through a Danvers Wal-Mart. The crash critically injured a one year old.

Also in June, an 88 year old in Stoughton, killed a 4 year old, after driving right through the crosswalk she was in.

And in Amherst, a young woman is dead after a 75 year old drivers hit her on an access road near the UMass campus.

"I don't think you can put an age on it. There's so many health factors that can occur," Richardson says when asked about an age where drivers should be retested.

However, one Bay State lawmaker is putting an age on it. Brian Joyce is proposing mandatory driving tests every five years for people 85 years and older.

"That's when your eyesight starts to fail and your health starts to fail at that age," Lamb says.

Lamb had the talk years ago with her mom. But like many elderly drivers, she didn't want to give up the keys.

"It was very hard because my mother was a very very strong-willed woman and being diabetic, she wanted to remain independent. She was not going to give up anything for anyone," Lamb says.

But lawmakers say knowing when it's time to hang it up, could save a life. And drivers are hoping it could be theirs.

Currently, around half of the states in the country have specific rules for elderly drivers, while in Massachusetts, every driver submits to an eye test every ten years.
