Days after a fatal fire that destroyed their home, the Wood family speaks out about the tragedy, the loss, and the struggle to survive.

Days after the Wood family lost everything, the smoky terror of Saturday, still haunts Kiara Wood.

"You could feel the flames coming up the stairs," she says.

Wood still wears the hospital bracelet from the day, her life was flipped upside down. The day a fire killed her two brothers and destroyed her Bay Street home.

"I just immediately started screaming help and grabbing people and running out of the house," Wood says.

The fire struck everyone inside. If not physically, emotionally.

"I never imagined I would lose two of my siblings to it," she says.

The family of 12, was knocked down to 10 in just minutes. Her 17 year old brother Marshal, and 4 year old brother Malik, died in the fire.

"I guess I'm the fortunate one to make it out the way I did," Wood says.

Kiara was released from the hospital, where she was treated for smoke inhalation. Her two other sisters are in critical condition at a Boston hospital as Kiara and family plan the funerals for her brothers.

"Marshal was energetic, always laughing and giggling. Everyone he knew he touched their lives. And Malik, he was a junior Marshal," Woods says, remembering her brothers.

The big family, one that usually spent their evenings eating together, are now missing two spots at the dinner table. It's an image that's now sinking in.

"I'll never see them smile again, or walk or talk again. It's very painful," Wood says.

The family did not have home insurance. Nor did they have a life insurance policy on either of their children. If you would like to make a donation, you can visit any Citizens or Peoples Bank in Western Mass.
