Two brothers, a seventeen year old and a four year old, lost their lives in a house fire on Saturday. There were no smoke detectors in the home. And fire officials are reinforcing the need for working smoke detectors.

The Springfield Fire Department received a frantic phone call from Melissa Bell Wood, the victims' mother, after flames ignited in the basement of her Bay Street home and quickly spread.

In all, there were eleven people inside, nine of them children. Two didn't make it out alive. Seventeen year old Marshall Wood and four year old Malik Bell. Two other children were taken to a Boston hospital treated for burns, despite the fire departments quick response.

Officials say an electrical box at the bottom of the cellar stairs started the fire at 671 Bay Street. On Monday, candles, flowers and messages of support lay in front of the home. As well as bags of donations in front of the Celestial Praise Church of God in Springfield where the mother worked.
