Two teens were seriously injured after their dirt bikes collided head on.
The accident happened at on Kings Bluff Drive in Colrain, only a few miles northeast of Greenfield. CBS 3 Springfield was the only TV station on scene.

Neighbor Jake MacDonald says, "I heard them all riding and I was going to go all out and ride with them and I was walking down the street to go get my dirt bike and I heard a big pop and so that's when I got worried and rode up the hill and I saw them laying down."

Ambulances, police cruisers and fire trucks flooded into this Colrain neighborhood shortly after 1:00 this afternoon. They were responding to the scene of a dirt bike accident involving two teenage boys who collided head on with one another on Kings Bluff Drive.

One of the boys was transported to the fire department where he was then flown to the hospital by helicopter. Neighbors say his injuries were very serious. The other boy was rushed to the hospital by ambulance.

Another neighbor Justin McCloud says, "The bike's totaled, the front end is off of the bike of the kid who was life flighted was on."

McCloud says he frequently rode dirt bikes with the two boys. In fact, it was only a few days ago when Justin broke his collar bone. McCloud says he was riding his bike too fast around a corner when he hit a rock and crashed.

Neighbor Michael Williams says, "It's basically every kid around here that does it, every kid has a dirt bike, it's a real popular sport around here."

And it can lead to injuries. Michael Williams also rides dirt bikes in the neighborhood. He too broke his collar bone last week.

Williams says, "Same thing kind of happened I crashed into another kid and broke my collar bone."

Neighbors say the two boys were wearing helmets and safety gear. Police have not yet released the names of the teens so we have not been able to check on their condition.

Would like to see a follow up news report on this incident. I think that it would be extremly helpful. Alot of negativity has come out of this, and I don't think it is helpful to anybody. I would also like to see some research done on the laws around the use of all terrain veichles and a helpful way of letting caring parents know the laws so that at a time when something serious like this happens fingers aren't pointed at them or their parenting skills questioned. 802-380-4152
