A fast-moving fire claimed the lives of a young child and a teen on Saturday morning.

The blaze broke out on Bay Street in Springfield just after 8:15 a.m.

Springfield firefighters did their best to contain to fire that engulfed the single-family home at 671 Bay Street.

17-year-old Marshall Wood and 4-year-old Malik Bell died from their injuries.

Eleven members of the Wood family were inside the home when the fire began in the basement, according to Springfield Fire spokesman Dennis Leger, a patrolling police officer and some area residents were the first to try and help the family.

"Apparently a police officer patrolling who got the call first was here with a passerby in a car that was stopped. They where pounding on the door, trying to evacuate residents upon our arrival," said Leger.

Edwin Waldon was the good samaritan who tried to get to the kids who where trapped in the basement.

"I'm trying to get to them and asking is anyone in here? 'I'm over here I'm over here', they where like moaning," he said.

The mother of the children, Melissa Wood was taken to Baystate Hospital. Two of her daughters where transferred to a Boston hospital for burn treatment.

Dennis Ledger said the initial investigation of the cause does not lead to anything suspicious.

"Fire chaplains are on scene with the family, Red Cross is assisting, it's a tragic situation. Everyone in the neighborhood is upset," said Leger.

This is the first fatality involving a fire in Springfield in close to a year and a half.

The Red Cross has been on the scene providing the Wood family with the essentials they need, food, water, clothing, and especially support.
