The hunt is on for a man accused of murdering a known criminal in Holyoke, but the trigger man is not the only one being blamed.

Police have issued an arrest warrant for 39-year old Braulio Maysonet-Mateo. Police say he shot Luis Fernandez to death in Holyoke Sunday afternoon.

In an ironic twist the victim of the latest murder in Holyoke had himself been charged with murder and other crimes.

Chief Scott says if the man was in prison like he should have been, he'd still be alive.

He says Fernandez had a lengthy criminal history, including a conviction of manslaughter and illegal possession of a gun, also an arrest in Holyoke back in 2004 for another charge of illegal possession of a firearm.

The Holyoke police chief says its this revolving door of justice that needs to be jammed, and its judges who are the repeat offenders.

"It's the police officers that are looking out for the well being of the public, the judges are not, and that's there job too, and they forget that," said Chief Scott.

Chief Scott is so fed up with the lenient sentencing, he is calling for a protest outside the courthouses in Springfield, Pittsfield, Worcester and Boston this Thursday at 10am, urging citizens to send this message to judges.

"We want you to do your job, enforce the laws we have on the books, who can do tha, the people in the black robe sitting on the bench," adds Chief Scott.

Scott says the light sentencing not only lets criminals back on the streets, but sets and example to young people that there won't be severe consequences for acts of crime, something Springfield city councilor and mayoral candidate Bud Williams agrees with.

"In a lot of cases they become heroes to kids on the streets, they say hey if he can go do that and get out, I'll take a shot knowing that in the back of my mind I'll take a long sentence"

Chief Scott feels so strongly about this issue, he said he's willing to take the day off himself and hit the picket lines this Thursday at 10am.
