It can be a challenge these days owning your own business, and for a Holyoke furniture store it's been even tougher.

Eddy's furniture store has been a landmark in Holyoke for more than 80 years, but in this economy the owner admits it's been tough staying alive. "When I was younger there was about 35 furniture stores in the area and now we are the only ones. So things have been tough for everyone," says owner Peter Hicks.

But things just got a little tougher. In two separate incidents, just two days apart, the business is down thousands of dollars. "In retail terms about 5-thousand dollars worth of furniture, " adds Hicks.

The so called "bad" luck started Sunday morning when a worker noticed this trailer behind the store open, the locks broken. Thousands of dollars worth of furniture gone. Everything from bureaus, to entertainment pieces swiped sometime overnight. And worst of all, most of the pieces had already been sold. Hicks says his insurance may not cover the loss.

And the bad news doesn't end there. Just two days later, Hick's phone rang again. A woman who was allegedly drunk, drove over the curb and hit the side of the furniture store, causing thousands of dollars more worth of damage.

Two major setbacks in two days. Hick's says it's a hard lesson learned. "I need to look into better security for the future," says Hicks.

The thief has not been caught, as for the alleged drunk driver she was arrested.
