West Springfield police have identified the woman who abandoned her newborn in a motel room early Saturday morning. It's a sad situation that could have been prevented by the Baby Save Haven Act.

This baby sleeping soundly at Holyoke Medical Center was brought into the world safe and healthy. It's what should have happened to the newborn abandoned here at the Welcome Inn in West Springfield. The infant was found by a couple staying in the room next door who heard the crying.

Motel Guest Thomas Dougherty says, "Whoever it was delivered the baby and then left."

The situation could have been prevented. The Baby Safe Haven Act took effect in October of 2004. The law allows a parent to legally surrender a baby 7 days old or younger without facing criminal prosecution.

Perinatal Nurse Manager Virginia Thomas says, "The law was created to prevent and repercussions against the parents. As long as there haven't been any signs of abuse against the newborn the parents can bring the baby to these specified spots and leave the baby and not worry that there are going to be charges placed against them."

The Baby Safe Havens include hospitals like Holyoke Medical Center, police stations and manned fire stations. The baby HAS to be handed off to another person and can't just be left on the doorstep. Another mother made a bad decision in Westfield in April 2006. This is video of the scene where an infant was found wrapped in plastic and abandoned in a dumpster. Like the newborn found in Westfield, the infant found at the motel survived but barely.

Thomas says, "The baby was wet when it was found which is really dangerous to newborns for their temperature control so we're just really lucky that the couple found that baby when they did."

Motel Guest Kim Dougherty says, "It's really sad I have two kids of my own and to see that especially as a mother was really disturbing."

The department of social services says they now have custody of the newborn. They say she is healthy and doing well. There is a 24 hour Baby Safe Haven Hot-line number. That number is 866-814-SAFE.
