A newborn baby is discovered bloody and abandoned in a West Springfield motel. A couple staying their couldn't believe what they had found, but if they hadn't, the newborn might not be alive.

Thomas and Kim Dougherty were staying in room 4 at the Welcome Inn on Riverdale Street in West Springfield on Saturday night. They say the people in room 5 were partying and expected to hear some noise.

Thomas Dougherty says, " We were in our room right next door to where it happened and we heard a lot of banging around and a lot of movement and it sounded like something was going on."

What they didn't expect to hear is the sound of a baby, all alone, next door.

Kim Dougherty says, "We heard what sort of sounded like crying so I kicked the door open and in the middle of the bed there was a baby and it was still covered in everything, the cord was still attached and there were blankets around it but not really covering it."

The Dougherty's immediately dialed 911 and kept the baby warm until police and paramedics arrived. West Springfield police say the baby was still breathing when they arrived and was rushed to Baystate Medical Center.

Thomas Dougherty says, "The baby looked healthy, a normal decent size and it looked like a really healthy baby but at the time there was a lot of blood, it was a mess."

The room where the baby was found has since been cleaned. But the Dougherty's say it was littered with beer bottles and drug paraphernalia. Police add that a bloody towel and a bloody sock were found in the bathroom.

Thomas Dougherty says, "Whoever it was delivered the baby and then left."

Kim Dougherty says, "It's really sad, I have two kids of my own and to see that especially as a mother it was really disturbing."

At this point it is still unclear who was staying in the motel room and whether or not the mother of the newborn has been found. The condition of the baby is not being released.
