Construction Site Collapses; Sends Two To Hospital

Northampton fire officials got the call just before quarter to five late this afternoon. Trusses being installed as part of the new senior center roof collapsed. Two carpenters fell forty feet onto a concrete slab.. Firefighters had to use chainsaws to cut the fallen trusses that had landed on top of the construction workers.

The Northampton fire chief says, "Within approxiamatley 20 minutes both of those individuals were freed from entrapment and have subseqeuntly been transported to bay state hospital with non life threating injuries".

The subcontractors were working on the towns senior center. The project has been under construction for a couple of months neighbors say they have called OSHA complaining about various subcontractors on the job for not practice a safe work environment

Other nearby neighbors heard the crash of the roof trusses. A few hours after the accident they were still shaken up.

One nearby neighbor said, " I was just taking a little cat nap and I thought I was dreaming. It was so close to home it sounded like a small plane crash and there was a lot of commotion and yelling and I am pretty shaken up by it. a lot of people in the neighborhood are upset."

Northampton police detectives began a tight lipped investigation tonight. OSHA investigators arrived on the scene questioning carpenters and laborers at police headquarters.

The site is closed until the investigation is complete and the site is made safe.
