Administrators at New Leadership Charter School are now working with a Springfield mother to investigate allegations of bullying among students. The effort comes after the woman's 11-year-old son took his own life.

New Leadership Charter School officials are breaking their silence after a 6th grade student took his own life at his home earlier this week. 11-year-old Carl Walker Hoover had complained to his family for months he was being bullied at school. His mother says she contacted the school, but never got any help for her son.

Peter Daboul, the newly elected chairman of the school board of directors, admits Sirdeana Walker did contact the school. So they are starting an investigation to see how many times, and what help if any she was offered. " In response to this we are going to look at a detailed log and then look at teacher records to see what really went on, " says Daboul.

Daboul says they do not tolerate bullying in the building or on school grounds. Although the school answers to the state, Daboul says New Leadership operates under the city's school policy on bullying. "Could be anything, detention or suspension all depends on the degree of the incident, " adds Daboul.

Sirdeana Walker still plans to ask the state to conduct its own investigation. Carl's death has already changed the attitude of his fellow students. "They are realizing what can happen and what their behavior can result in, " says Daboul.

Carl Walker-Hoover's funeral is planned for Monday. Services are scheduled for Monday at Celestial Praise at 321 Wilbraham Road in Springfield. A wake is planned for 11 a.m and the funeral follows at noon.
