Springfield's Shriners Hospital In Danger Of Closing

"I thought I needed to let people know the financial status of the hospitals " explains Ralph Semb. But for Semb, the chairman of the board of trustees for the Shriners Hospitals for Children, the news wasn't good. He notified other board members this week of the major budget deficit 22 hospitals across the country are currently facing.

The 22-hospital network relies on public donations--but because of a national recession donations are down. So down in fact, the organization has been losing a million dollars a day since 2001. "If we leave it the way it is then we will have to close 22 hospitals and that's not what we want to do, " says Semb.

So the board is now looking at other options. And that includes closing or suspending the services at six of its hospitals. On the short list, is Springfield's Shriners Hospital. "it's not being used and those are the ones that may be taking the cut, " adds Semb.

Semb says a final decision on the closures will be made sometime in July, but they are trying their best to avoid it. They are also looking into decreasing the hospital's budget by 30 percent, or add the option of third party pay. But if the decision is to close Springfield's hospital, it would effect more than 13-hundred children with orthopedic problems annually.

The medical center has been providing free care to children since the 19-20's. But Semb is confident the children will not be forgotten. "They will be taken care of, even if we have to ship them off to other places, " says Semb.

Other than the patients, if the Springfield facility closes more than 200 employees will also lose their jobs.

They are just too important to let this happen. Please pray that there are enough of us to vote to put a stop this madness.

Please do not close the Springfield Shriners. We already have an excellent staff and a fabulous facility in place---lets put bailout money into this wonderful place to keep it going. These children are getting the best medical care in the world. It would be crazy to close this facility and expect these children to thrive like they are now. Shriners is all about hoping, praying and doing. Where else would the children go for this excellent care?

I received three spine fusions and the best nursing care back in the 90's at Springfield Shriner's. Closing this facility will create a tremendous burden on those 1300 families whose young will be shipped out of New England for treatment. Coming from Maine I know exactly how difficult those miles of separation are as the weeks drag on in Springfield. I strongly believe that closing this facility will slam shut the access that so many of us owe our mobility to.

I heard this story from my parents today and had to check it out for myself. It breaks my heart. When I was born the Doctor said I would never walk because of my birth defects. A neighbor told my parents about Shriners Hospital in Springfield. I was evaluated and by the time I was three I was walking with the aid of a brace. After three surgeries and several prosthetic devices I was able to walk and play sports! I live out of state, but will always be grateful to the great staff there!

The Shriner's hospital in Sprinfield has been a "God's send" helping so many children. Let us unit to think out of the box in ways to not only bring in money but ways on how to constrain the budget. Will employees take less pay,can insurance pay. At a microlevel brainstorming with employees sharing the seriousness asking them to save in anyway possible, such as,turning off the heat at night in areas not housed with patients, turning off lights when leaving, unplugging lights coffee makers etc

Rather than close it we should accept insurance money when available! It also stimulates the local acconomy which is particularly necessary in these times.

I'm reading all these comments on how the government needs to help and how people are doing a fund raiser for one week or one day. All this i wonderful, however these events will not keep the hospitals open. People need to commit to the Shrine on a permanent basis. If everyone whose lives were touched by the Shriner's were to join their local Shriners organization, this wouldn't be happening, but it is far to easy to say I don't have time, and let someone else carry the burden, JOIN THE SHRINERS

I had to travel miles away to get an operation for my daughter who is 8 years old. The care is exceptional and the staff is so professional. It is a shame that the hospital plans to close down because of lack of funds. The president needs to place the children who so desperately need care first and focus on what matters: healthcare and not banks or automobile companies. We can walk or roll our wheelchairs if that is the case but please help the children.

Maybe if all these families that have received help from the shriners, would join the shriners fraternity, and give back to their community, perhaps more funds could be raised to assist in keeping these facilities open. It isn't that expensive to join, but it will require some time. Time that can be helping so many children, by raising funds to keep these facilities open. Have your husbands and sons join the fraternity, this is the best way to SAVE THE SHRINERS HOSPITAL. thank you for your time.

My 7 year old daughter has been a patient at Shriner's since birth. And for 7 years I've been saying that Shriner's should be filing claims with insurance companies if the patients are covered by insurance. I think it's great that it's free for people who have no insurance and can't pay deductibles, etc., but my daughter is fully covered by Blue Cross and Shriner's could have easily billed them for years of care and surgeries. There would be no budget deficit if Shriner's billed insurance.
