The new transit and traveler information center at UMass Amherst in finally complete. The new facility will help driver in Western Massachusetts know what road conditions are like before they head out.

This is one of 11 cameras linked to the new 5 million dollar University Transit Center and Regional Traveler Information center at UMass Amherst.

It provides a place to manage the university's own bus system and provide the public with regional traffic reports. Congressman John Olver is especially proud of the new facility. He helped secure a nearly 4 million dollar grant for the project.

Olver said, "It's part of the intent through the RTIC, the regional transportation information center that's co-located here on the campus, so that should provide Transportation information in real time all over the Western part of the state."

Traffic cams are set up at several locations along Routes 9 and 116 and can be viewed at www.masstraveler.com. They give commuters a chance to monitor travel times, construction and congestion advisories and weather. The cameras are recording 24/7.

For motorists, it's as easy as clicking on the website, viewing the road your planning to travel on to see how traffic's moving and planning your commute from there.

Olver, "It is a very important piece of the transportation system here in Western Mass."

UMass Amherst will be adding to the existing traffic cameras in Amherst, Hadley, Northampton, Sunderland, Deerfield, Orange and Athol.

I just can't quite understand why 116 from N. Amherst to i 91 is left such an eclipsed two lane route-we need to finnish the split lane divided rout from Hadley to Whately..this can hardly wait??
