A giant hole and the mud around it is all that's left of a 20-inch water main break on Granby Road.
Nearly one million gallons of water flooded neighborhood streets and the basements of nearby houses.

Beverly Lafond, a Chicopee resident, said, "I woke up to a pleasant surprise, a flooded basement, I was totally in shock."

Nathan Turnbull said, "When I first found out is when I saw the stuff in my basement."

Tom Matulewicz said, "Right behind us all that street was under water."

Nearly 30 houses along Granby Road have been left to clean up the mess.
But those who were spared the mess were left with other problems.
Much of the city was without water or with very low water pressure.

Matulewicz said, "We had some brown water in our house this morning so we kind of knew something was going on and when we came over here all the streets were flooded and we kind of feel bad for the people that live around here."

Crews were on the scene most of the day as nearby residents and onlookers crowded around.
Cleanup crews say there is much work to be done and break has caused a least a million dollar problem.

Alan Starzyk said, "Not only do we have to repair the water main but we've got approximately 200 feet of road, on Granby Road that has been undermined and is not flat anymore."

Cleanup crews say once they finish digging up the hole before they can fix it.

Turnbull said, "I think it's pretty remarkable that the water did that."

City officials say most of the problems caused by the water main break should be solved by Monday morning.
