"Babbs was the place to be - it was always full weekdays weekends week nights," said Gerry Crane. Crane remembers Babbs Roller Rink in the 50's but since 1996 - the popular hot spot for families has been boarded up and closed off. Something Gerry wants to turn around. "The building in a lot of people's opinions is too important to let it go," said Crane.

And that's why he and other members of the Citizens Restoring Congamond are having a fundraiser this Saturday. To rebuild the Babbs Rink to its original state. "If somebody doesn't do something then its just going to deteriorate until that it won't be good for anything," Crane said.

But the building needs some work. "It needed much more than we expected. I for one expected to be able to go just go in there and replace some wiring fix the plumbing paint it put a coat of paint on it buy light fixtures turns out the building needs a lot more than we ever dreamed," said Crane.

The group has already spent 50 thousand dollars on materials for the renovation project. But it's going them at least twice that amount to finish the job. And he hopes Saturday's clam bake will help them reach their goal. "It's not over until its over. We will keep plugging at this as long as we can."

And for former Babb's skaters like Patricia Doyron and her husband Ron it'll be good to see their old hang out spot come back to life. "It was just an all around great place for kids for the summer. It's was wonderful. It's a shame that its not still there," said Doyron.

Most of the construction will be done by volunteers and they hope to have it up and running by next year.
