A Westfield car dealership closes its doors after more than 10 years in business. Regency Pontiac on East Main Street shut down Monday.

Unsold cars left the Regency Pontiac lot in Westfield by caravan Tuesday afternoon. The decade old dealership shut its doors for good Monday. Company staff wouldn't speak about why they closed, but other dealers did.

"I can foresee a lot of new car franchises selling or closing because of the tremendous overhead they have," says Robert Merigian.

Merigian runs the Westfield Auto Mall, a used car lot just a few feet away from Regency on East Main Street. He runs the location with only three employees. A dealer website lists Regency as employing close to 40. But that's not the only difference between the two. Merigian says Regency's Pontiac label may have hurt sales in a time when customers are looking to drive something more exotic.

"We've seen a change from domestic vehicles to more foreign," says Merigian. "We think it's because of the quality, not the fuel mileage."

In October, Suburban Chevrolet in Southwick was forced to close due to declining sales. And though Merigian has been able to keep his business on the road, he and his customers worry that these continued closures could hurt an already injured industry.

"We like bigger dealers around us, they bring in customers," says Merigian. "By Regency closing, it's not a help to us."

"Pretty much that's what drew me here," says car shopper Joe McNeish. "Knowing that there are five or six dealers close."
