Gasoline sparked an accidental fire Monday morning, destroying an auto repair shop, and damaging an adjacent business in Hatfield. At least six different fire departments responded to the call and dozens of people gathered to see what was happening. Both of the businesses and the owners are big parts of the small Hatfield community.

"It is such a tragedy," said Sherry Szawlowski.

Szawlowski watched as smoke billowed out of the Double B bar and restaurant in Hatfield, and thought about the many years of working at what is a second home for much of the community.

"People come here when they've lost loved ones. They come here and eat, see their loved ones and are embraced by the community," said Szawlowski.

She was one of dozens of community members who turned out to see how they could help. Around 9 a.m., fire officials say Larry Flynn, owner of C&L Service, was working under a car when gasoline spilled and was ignited by a light bulb. The fire destroyed the repair shop but the flames were kept from the restaurant by the a brick wall and the volunteer firefighters.

"It has been here a long time, almost like a second town hall," said Wayne Cournoyer, Co-owner of the Double B restaurant and bar.

He says damage to both businesses is a loss for the entire community.

"They are good friends of ours, obviously their building has been here as long as the other one. I feel for them," said Cournoyer.

Fire officials say most likely the auto shop is a complete loss. But with only water and smoke damage at the restaurant, the owners say they plan to re-open as soon as they can.
