West Springfield Churches Combine

By Justine Judge

Former St. Anne's Parishioner Pat Hanks said, "It was heartbreaking but there is really nothing that you can do now."

Except find a new place to worship. That's what parish members of St. Anne's and St. Louis have been forced to do...

Hanks said, "We worked so hard all through the summer when he gave us a reprieve since August to try to do something about keeping this church together and we fought a battle but we lost the war."

Today, they spent their first Sunday under the roof of what was formerly called Immaculate Conception Church. Now, it will be called St. Francis Xavier Cabrini.
The combination of the 3 parishes is something many from St. Anne's are still trying to warm up to.

Former St. Anne's Parishioner Connie Basiloney said, "I have been here now to the new St. Francis and I feel not quite that warm yet but I'm sure I will."

Parishioners from the former Immaculate Conception say they're happy to have more people around.
They say more parishioners will create a stronger church, one they hope will last for generations to come.

Former Immaculate Conception Parishioner William Johnston said, "We haven't seen this attendance since christmas and before that it was dwindling but now it's a packed house."

Something that comforted many people coming to the church for the first time.

Hanks said, "I was very surprised to see so many from St. Anne's that were here and it kind of gave you a feeling of a little more warmth that I think if I had gone in there and saw nobody from St. Anne's."

Johnston said, "Change happens for a reason, He doesn't close one door and not open another one for you."
