The windy and icy conditions makes it very hard for firefighters to put out a bad fire in Franklin County that leaves a family homeless on New Year's Eve.
It happened shortly after 1 o'clock Wednesday afternoon on Second Street in Turners Falls.
The house was engulfed in flames.
There was no one living on the second floor where the fire appears to have started.
But there was a family living on the first floor.
Everyone made it out safely.
Despite all the ice and snow -- firefighters say that area residents were very helpful.
Many of them helped dig out fire hydrants buried in snow.
Raymond Godin, the Turners Falls Fire Chief, said, "Resident made it really easy instead of having to drive 3 feet of packed snow and ice we could lay right in and get a steady water supply right on the fire."
Fire officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.
The say the damage is extensive.
