Christmas is over but a Western Massachusetts parish is still praying for a miracle. Dozens of congregants turned out on Friday to begin a peaceful vigil to keep their parish from closing.

With it's murals, stained glass, and Italian hand-carved statues, its easy to see why Saint Stanislaus Kostka Parish in Adams means so much to so many people.

"I was baptized here, I made my communion, my confirmation and I was married in this church," said Loretta Rysz Vinette, a parishioner at St. Stan's.

Her grandfather was one of the founders of Saint Stan's more than 100 years ago. But all the rich history and architecture could be coming to an end.

Last summer the Springfield Diocese notified the church it would have to close and merge with another parish. Speaking to the media Friday, parishioners said they'll begin a peaceful vigil to try to prevent their church from closing.

"We are appealing and hope to convince the Vatican that the Bishop made an error in judgment and that we will be allowed to open the church as a full church," said Francis Hajdas, a member of the church and on the committee for The Friends of St. Stan's.

The final Mass at St. Stan's is set for this Sunday, and parishioners say they'll still be here when it's over.
