A former Northampton bank has been turned into a hip main stream clothing store. Some say they're happy to see a new business but others feel the chain retailer doesn't quite fit.

Urban Outfitters has been open barely a week on Main Street, but its presence is hard to miss. The clothing store occupies the 85 year old former Northampton Institute for Savings building. A high-profile location in this thriving downtown dotted with independent retailers like Jackson and Connor.

Tara Tetreault co-owns the men's store and is watching Urban Outfitters closely.

Tetreault said, "So far, so good they just opened and I think that they've had a positive response this far, they are the first major apparel chain to come to the downtown main street strip so it should be interesting to see how it plays out."

Shoppers have also noticed the appearance of a chain store.

Shopper Emily Mchugh said, "At first I was kind of excited. I like Urban Outfitters but then once it got here I kind of felt like it didn't belong."

And after the chain's recent decision not to sell this shirt which reads "I support Same Sex Marriage" some say it might not fit in.

Shopper Jordan Strafer said, "It's kind of the anti Northampton."

No one from Urban Outfitters was able to comment on why the chain pulled the gay marriage shirts. But the owners Jackson & Connor jumped on the chance and purchased the rest of the shirts from a company in New Jersey. They've already sold more than half.

Tetreault says, "It was kind of interesting that they were opening in Northampton the same week or the week after they decided to pull all these shirts and have all this controversy because Northampton is pretty much the lesbian capitol of the United States so I mean it's really bad timing in terms of PR and marketing."

Strafer said, "I didn't want to shop there anyway and I don't want to shop there even more now."

Either way time will tell how well Urban Outfitters will fit in with its "mom and pop" neighbors.
