The prosecution rests its case in the trial of Jason Strickland. He is accused of allegedly abusing his stepdaughter Haleigh Poutre in September of 2005. That alleged abuse resulted in Haleigh suffering severe brain damage.

Despite more than a week of witnesses, the defense says only two offered any evidence that Jason Strickland allegedly abused his stepdaughter Haleigh Poutre. For several hours a child abuse expert went through more than a dozen photos taken when Haleigh was first brought to the hospital in September of 2005. She pointed out bruises, cuts and burns that covered the child from head to toe.

"It's a fully healed cigarette burn, that would not be from an accidental cause," says Dr. Christine Barron.

But defense attorneys say there is no medical evidence that shows who caused those injuries. They said during opening statements that Strickland believed Haleigh had caused many of them, including a gruesome burn on her chest, herself.

"Isn't it possible that somebody could have held the object close to the skin?" asked Defense Attorney Alan Black. "It's certainly possible isn't it?"

"That's possible, yes," replied Dr. Barron.

Black says the evidence that ties Strickland to the case isn't enough. He questioned a social worker in front of the judge, to determine if he would be allowed to question the consistency of statements made by Haleigh's younger sister. Samantha Poutre testified earlier in the trial that she saw Strickland push Haleigh down the stairs of their Westfield home, but the social worker recalled a different explanation.

"She told me that her and Haleigh were doing back flips and she hit her head on a pipe," says Terry Dec with the Department Of Children and Families.

The judge will make a ruling Thursday morning about whether or not Black can question Samantha's past statements. Black says he plans to call 12 witnesses, including Strickland.
