You hear the cars whizzing by. Sometimes you even see them speeding past you. It's a hobby with deadly consequences: Street racing. CBS 3 Springfield goes deep inside this high risk game.

Drivers experience the thrill of the race, but the track is a public street. While many are asleep, the high powered cars come out

"Clutches, headers, intake manifolds, injectors," says one driver, describing the modifications he makes to his vehicle.

All that, souped up for races where average speeds top 125 miles an hour.

"For the fun of it, we like the adrenaline and the rush," the driver, who goes by the name of Johnny, says.

It was around 1 o'clock at an undisclosed Indian Orchard location. At the time, 12 racers and three cars filled an empty parking lot.

"Every weekend, basically 11:30 till whenever it stops, 6 in the morning," Johnny says.

Each weekend they come in droves. This particular weekend, the races are behind a gas station, in an industrial area. Cars are lined up 10 at a time, taking off when the hands drop.

Hearing the tires screech and smelling the tires burn is all part of the life of a racer. To understand it, we needed to go inside.

The race we took part in topped out at 95 miles an hour. It lasted just 30 seconds. The rush was there, but so was the danger. In October, the street racing hobby claimed the lives of two. An 11 month old boy and the racer. He was tuning his car by speeding down a side street.

"We risk it to the limit, we go all out," Johnny says.

None of this is legal, so going all out sometimes means eluding the law. That's why there's decoys.

"You go in sleeper cars, a van, a cavalier," Johnny says.

But sometimes, police catch on. This night alone, we were chased away three times, but every time, the racers would go back for more.

After meeting a handful of racers, all of them acknowledge the danger, and that's why they're pleading for a place of their own. A real track, where they can race in a controlled environment. But so far, there's none here in Western Mass.

Yes I think they should build a race track here. Things would be much safer in a controlled enviroment. Racing is not the only issue with the unsafe driving. No blinkers, tailgating, running red lights, mark lane violatons are even more problems and can cause very bad accidents. Lots of people seem to forget about driving safely, yes even our public servants are guilty.. Driving defensivly is a must now adays...

maybe some of these people who love racing so much, should put a little effort into a petition or something to bring a track to western mass
