The 450 thousand dollar system, installed two months ago, picks up on the noise of gunshots, and within 15 seconds pinpoints an address for police.

"Our dispatch is equipped with a sensor device saying where the shots are coming from and how many shots there are," says Springfield Police Sergeant John Delaney. "Often times it will also tell you the caliber weapon being used."

The "Shot Spotter" is what brought police to the scene outside the Pine Street Market Tuesday night. 28 year old Alberto Rodriguez was shot three times, before he got into his car and tried to drive away. Rodriguez died at the hospital, but thanks to the new technology police were already on scene gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses.

"Cars were right in the area at the time, and we got there pretty much right after the device was activated," says Delaney.

Today the Rodriguez family gathered outside their Florence Street home, just feet from where Alberto was shot. Police say they questioned several people on scene, including the owner of the Pine Street Market. The family hopes the person responsible is brought to justice soon.

"We don't have him anymore," says Linette Rivera. "We can't touch him or hug him. If he is in jail his family won't be able to touch him or hug him either."

Though no arrests have been made in this case, police say the "Shot Spotter" will increase how quickly crimes are solved in the future.

"The dispatcher will immediately send someone there," says Delaney. "So the chances of police making an arrest right after shots are fired is enhanced greatly."
