Thrift Stores Thriving in Bad Economy

By Miranda Grossman

It hasn't even been open for 24 hours, but lines at the new Goodwill Store in Chicopee are nearly out the door. Colleen Gagnon was one of hundreds at the Goodwill for the opening, and she's saving a lot of money shopping for her three young kids.

"We can get nice clothes for reasonable prices and when you have a family and with the economy its nice to get affordable prices," said Gagnon.

Buying name brand clothes for two or three bucks is becoming more important as the economy is struggling and people are looking for a bargain. Thrift stores across the Baystate are seeing a boost in sales.

"We've had a lot of new customers in our stores. We are seeing all over, people that haven't thought of Goodwill before, but are now," said Julie Gornall who works for Goodwill Industries.

While some donations, like furniture, are decreasing, sales have been up about ten percent over last year.
